Senior Class Video

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Hello Fellow Graduate Students & Young Professionals, The first summer meeting of Emerging Catholic Professionals will be on Tuesday, June 9th, at 6:30pm in the rectory of St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center. We will be meeting to discuss the topic of the nature and role Catholic Universities in the life of the Church. This is a timely topic, in light of President Obama's recent graduation address at Notre Dame and the controversy surrounding it, and we hope you will join us to discuss it. Father Steve Beseau of the St. Lawrence Center has kindly agreed to share his thoughts on this issue with us, and as a point of reference for our discussion I am attaching to this email a copy of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the document issued by Pope John Paul II on Catholic universities in 1990. Hopefully this will give us a framework in which to discuss issues of Catholic identity and what role universities like Notre Dame play not only vis-a-vis the Church but also vis-a-vis contemporary society as well. (Don't worry if you can't get to read all of it, by the way; reading the introduction will give you a basic idea of what the pope was talking about, and its not like its a homework assignment.) We will be providing beer and wine for everyone, and perhaps a few snacks, and we would much appreciate it if you would bring a few dollars to cover the cost or perhaps some food to share in lieu of that. We look forward to seeing you. Pax Christi,Darrick Taylor Ph.D Candidate, British History 727 Arkansas Street Lawrence, KS 66044785-840-6169

Holy Week

“Lent is a penitential season…a time when men once put on hairshirts, sacrificing any hope of bodily ease for 40 days…(G.K.Chesterton) once said that St. Thomas a Becket wore a hair shirtunder his purple, so that the people might have the benefit of thepurple, and he might have the benefit of the penance…The modern hairshirt is the sum of the trials, annoyances and criticisms whichsurround one in the tense and nervous world of today…But the new hairshirt is always humbling…No man can be proud of the fact that heknows a bore, or that his car got stuck half an hour in traffic…Thetrouble is that most wearers of the hair shirt get no spiritualbenefit out of it…because they do not use their trials properly, theyhave the pain but miss the merit…Pain is sacrifice without the loveof God. Sacrifice is pain combined with the love of God. There isan enormous difference between the woman who diets and woman whofasts, although they both may lose 15 pounds. But one does it forthe sake of her body, and the other for the sake of her soul…perhapsif we examined our conscience we should discover that we ourselveswere the worst hair shirt out neighbor has to bear.”

-Archbishop Fulton Sheen in his essay “Modern Hair Shirt”

Genius of Women

We had so much fun planning this show and seeing it come together. (Jasmine was doing little dances at intermission, which is always a good sign. Karen has had a permanent smile on her face ever since the show started last night.) And what a great way to start - Genuine Imitation followed by some hilarious comedy. And then the acts just kept drawing everyone in . . . with laughter, with tears, with passion and energy, with melodies and harmonies, with thought-provoking messages. We are also thankful for all of the exceptional artwork that helped transform the space into a beautiful venue for displaying feminine genius in a variety of forms. We can definitely call this show a success - not just in its entertainment value but also in its conveying of our theme. Because of each of your unique contributions, we were able to highlight and celebrate the beauty and dignity of women. Additionally, we raised $300 for women in Uganda. Thank you again. We hope that you enjoyed this experience as much as we did.

Come join us on April 2, at 12.30pm in Green Hall, room 107. This presentation is a great opportunity to see two different perspectives on women’s rights. Jennifer Meitl just contacted the St. Lawrence Center and said, "We are still safe and we are spending the day at the Basilica... incredible. Any intentions you would like me to take to Our Lady?"

Keep the mission trip in your prayers. They will return to KU Sunday morning after working a week in Colon, Mexico at an orphanage.
